Top Tips for Cleaning Around your Braces

March 4th, 2011

At Wilson Orthodontics, we understand it can be a bit trickier to properly clean around your teeth during orthodontic treatment. With wires and brackets to negotiate around, it is easier to miss areas that could lead to gum disease and cavities. However, with the proper tools and knowledge, you can ensure you maintain a healthy smile throughout orthodontic treatment.

Besides normal brushing and flossing, patients are encouraged to use proxy brushes to make sure to get all food remains out of their braces. There are also some wonderful new products on the market to help patients practice good oral hygiene. The new Oral B electric tooth brush is said to be a "smart tooth brush", it is different than other electric tooth brushes on the market. This tooth brush comes with a special head for people with braces, the head is designed to fit around the brackets to ensure that the tooth is getting properly cleaned instead of just the front of the brackets. It also comes with a display that mounts in the bathroom, which keeps time you while you brush to ensure that you brush long enough but not too hard. When you apply more than 220 grams of pressure the display will flash to let you know that you are applying too much pressure so you do not damage your gums. Give us a call if you have any questions about oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment- we are exited to be able to offer these advancements in our office!
